Talent is Never Enough Chapter 4: "Focus Directs Your Talent"

Hello again. I know, it has been a while. When I began this journey it seemed like a great idea. School is now in full swing and time is quickly disappearing. Between sporting events, morning rehearsals, trying to workout, lesson planning, etc, I find it hard to blog.

In chapter 4, Maxwell begins by saying,
Focus does not come naturally to us, yet it is essential for anyone who wants to make the most of his talents.
It is funny how God works. Just this morning I had this quote come to reality. As I was working with my jazz choir (top musicians at the high school), I couldn't help but notice that we were running right over simple musical markings like crescendos, staccatos, and simple rhythms. I encouraged them to simply take notice of them this time and see what happens. Just by bringing the issue into focus, it was amazing what kind of change took place. Only when you combine talent with focus can your potential take you far!
The Power of Focus: Maxwell continues his chapter by discussing some important facts regarding focus. I will very quickly outline these facts...

1) Focus Does Not Come Naturally to Most People
In our current society, we have infinite choices & opportunities to comprehend. Often times, myself included, we find ourselves spending way too much time on things that we don't really care about. Don Marquis stated it well by saying,
"Ours is a world where people don't know what they want and are willing to go through hell to get it."
Only with focus can we solve such a predicament. One of the main points to success today is concentration. Again, I think of my students. When we are having a productive rehearsal, we tend to have more members focused and on the same page. The "off" rehearsals are those where everybody has their mind somewhere else and the goal of growth and success on the literature is NOT the focus. As a leader, it is important to ask yourself; "Am I helping others make progress?" If the answer to this is no, then I know I am off track and need to refocus myself. The bottom line is that this focus is NOT natural, and it takes a conscious effort(and hard work) to maintain it.

2)Focus Increases Your Energy
When I first read this I was confused, as if I'm working on something that doesn't come naturally to me, I would assume I would be expending energy. Then after reading Maxwell brought this truth into light. He explained that if you desire to achieve something, you first have to know what your target is. Without a target, your work is in vain!
"Few men during their lifetime come anywhere near exhausting the resources dwelling within them. There are deep wells of strength that are never used" - Admiral Richard E. Byrd
This Saturday on the radio our head cross country coach said something similar in regards to the girls Cross Country team. He was explaining that he doesn't think they have experienced true pain yet while running. They haven't been so focused as to push themselves to this deep well of "ability." Often times when we decide to narrow our focus onto a set goal, we are able to tap into these wells and progress more than we ever imagined possible.

3)Focus expands your life
Many of my students would agree that one passion of mine is leadership. Only when I truly focus on leadership can I expand my ideas. When I focus on whatever the subject at hand is, I can put my full effort into it. When I have too many things going on at once, I shortchange EVERYTHING and struggle to grow in these activities.

4)Focus Must Be Intentionally Sustained
Intentional: this means that it is a conscious effort and not just a natural phenomenon. People do NOT naturally remain focused. Today I asked one of my middle school choirs if they were tired from working so hard...and many rose their hands. I explained to them that only then did they experience what a focused rehearsal feels like. When you are focused on an activity, it feels like work. The positive side is that progress is leaps and bounds ahead of the days when the group lacks focus! John Maxwell defines success this way:
"Success is the progressive realization of a predetermined worthwhile goal."
You have to believe that the goal is worthwhile. As a leader, it is imperative that you share this goal with your team and convince them that it is a worthwhile goal. If they are not on the same page as you, then your rate of success will be diminished. I often tell my students that they are simply products of their environment. If I create an environment where success is expected & experienced, more success becomes the product!

So where do we go from here. We've identified some characteristics of focus..but how do I apply this to my life?

A) Be Intentional - Make Every Action Count
People who are not sure of where they are going can't access their will power to succeed. When you have a CLEAR goal in mind, you can focus your talent & efforts to completing these goals. Working with intention includes a constant focus. You have to do the right thing moment by moment, being as consistent as possible. One can only get better or digress. Very few times can somebody maintain at the current level they are at.

B) Don't Let Yesterday Hijack Your Attention
Too many people either yearn for the past or dwell on the past, getting stuck on history! Last week my women's choir had a horrible rehearsal that I ended up cutting about 15 minutes short. I did some office work as they sat in silence. I never told them to sit quietly, but they know that MY intentions were severely affected by their decisions. Later that evening, I sent them all an evening clarifying what happened. I then went on to explain to them, you can dwell on the experience or learn from it. Most of the students came to class the next day with a positive outlook...while others were scared to death!

C)Focus on the Present
One of my favorite bible passages is Matthew 6:34, which says
"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own"
Focusing on tomorrow does NO good. There is ONLY one time in your life that you can control, and that is the present! Maxwell explains some things he feels helps him focus on the present. He reads daily, listens to others daily, sets aside time to think, and he writes daily! I STINK at this area of life. I don't read daily, I do try to listen to others daily, and I definitely don't write daily.

D) Stay Focused on Results
All tasks have difficulties, so what good does it do to focus on them. Often times we don't see the successes and small victories because we are so concerned with these difficulties. Focus on results, regardless of how big they are. Just recently, I've really been working at losing weight. I realized that if there is 1/10 a pound loss from yesterday to today, it is STILL success. It could be weight gain...so why not focus on the result. It is really hard to avoid those who struggle with this. As a leader, it is important that we focus on results. Focusing on results makes it easier to remain positive & encouraging.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
It is amazing how God puts readings in your life when you need them. I've really been struggling lately with focus at my job. Personal focus but getting my choirs to focus. I've decided first of all I need to lead by example. Also, I need to show my kids the importance of the goals we are striving for. If they don't care about the goals, you can't expect them to be focused. I need to focus on progress, regardless of how big it is. Going into rehearsals with a goal is important, but it is more important for your team to feel successful, regardless of how big the success is. Now it is equally important not to give false praise and make them feel success when in reality there was little. Expectations need to be clear. My college professor once explained me that the higher the expectations, the higher the support. If I expect my kids to rehearse at a certain degree of focus, I need to support that focus through positive reinforcement.
Now that I got back into this book, I'm deciding how to deal with my section leaders at the high school level. I had some applications, but don't know how to go about picking out the group. I feel on one hand I need to learn more about leadership before taking the kids down this path, but I also feel that it would be great for our program for these students to walk this path beside me...any thoughts?

Talent is Never Enough Chapter 3: "Initiative Activates Your Talent"

So it has been a while since I have posted a blog regarding my reading. The truth is, I had the opportunity to read 6 chapters of my book on the flights to and from Poland, and I'm going back to revisit each chapter to check the notes I made. Hopefully now that school has started I can get into a routine of blogging.

"Talent-plus people don't wait for everything to be perfect to move forward. They take initiative." - John Maxwell

I think that a lot of people truly struggle to take initiative. Maxwell goes on to explain that if you want to reach your potential, you have to show initiative. He then continues to give reasons why initiative must be taken.

1) Initiative Is the First Step to Anywhere You Want to Go: This idea got me to thinking what would the world be like if NOBODY were to take the initiative on something. Somebody has to be the first. That is pretty scary, because being the first makes you vulnerable...but leaders look past that fear. It is also important to realize that you HAVE to follow through once you initiate!

2) Initiative Closes the Door to Fear: We all have fears. Maxwell explains that you have a choice, either the fear controls you or you control the fear. It sounds so simple when typing it, but application of this principle is so difficult. Right now I'm really struggling with some fears and getting over this with taking some initiative. Today I was worried to confront a situation, but took the initiative to do so. Was the outcome what I would desire....no. But at least I know that I took the chance to overcome that fear and initiate the conversation.

"Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear. Any action is better than no action at all." - Norman Vincent Peale

That being said, I think it is important that you are wise about what action you take. Sometimes, as I experienced, the results of your actions are not what you want. Taking that into account, you can then adjust your actions and take a new approach.

3) Initiative Opens the Door to Opportunity: Taking initiative does NOT guarantee that you will succeed...but not taking initiative has a greater return of failure.

"It is better to be 80% sure and make things happen than it is to wait until you are 100% sure because by then, the opportunity will have already passed you by." - John Maxwell

4) Initiative Is Often the Difference Between Success and Failure: Don't wait to have somebody tell you wait to do, because you may wait yourself to failure. If you have a good thought, idea, or intention...act on it. Only through acting on them are you taking initiative and action for yourself. Also, it doesn't matter how talented you are...without initiative you will NEVER reach your potentials.

In the second half of this chapter, Maxwell goes on to explain what a person looks like who lacks initiative. Rather than focusing on this, I'm going to list the characteristic and personality traits of these individuals. As you read them, think about them. Does the list below better describe you? If so, refer up to the benefits of taking initiative and see the benefits. If you struggle with this, take baby steps. Pick you early battles carefully...but nonetheless, you have to pick a battle. Below is the list of characteristics of individuals who lack initiative...

1) People who lack initiative fail to see the consequences of inaction
2)People who lack initiative want someone else to motivate them
3) People who lack initiative look for the perfect time to act
4) People who lack initiative like tomorrow better than today

The bottom line is that it is often easier to abide by the above list. But easier is not always better. As stated earlier, you have good ideas, but they will never become more than ideas unless you act on them!

Below are some suggestions Maxwell makes on how to become a talent+initiative individual, along with some added commentary by myself. I want to continue to remind you that this is NOT easy and not always safe. When talking about investing in the stock, you can choose high risk stock with high reward potential, or low risk stock with low reward potential. To not take initiative would be to invest in NO risk stock and have NO reward potential!

1) Accept responsibility for your life: Responsibility & initiative are inseparable. We will all experience setbacks, we all face obstacles, but we need to show initiative anyway. Dick Butler said it best when he exclaimed,
" Life isn't fair. It isn't going to be fair. Stop sniveling and whining and go out and make it happen for you."

2) Focus on the benefits of completing a task: I know that a pros & cons list is kind of dorky, but sometimes we focus so much on the cons we forget there are benefits to a decision or task. More importantly, to become effective & make progress in your area of talent you can't spend your valuable time on unimportant or unnecessary tasks.

3) Share your goals with a friend who will help you: This is hard for me. I struggle to share goals because that means others will know if I fail or not. A couple weeks before leaving for Poland, I decided I needed to lose weight. I had a goal of being under 200 lbs before school started but I shared that with very few people. I made that goal, but if I didn't then nobody would know of my failures. No my goal is to be under 180 by my birthday. If you read this blog, you now have the opportunity to hold me accountable!
"There is no way to put a value on the assistance that others can give you in achieving your dreams. Share your goals and dreams with people who care about you and will encourage you in accomplishing them." -John Maxwell

REMEMBER, PREPARATION INCLUDES DOING

Due to time and not losing EVERYBODY'S attention, I skipped a few points Maxwell added. It is crazy how God puts lessons in your life and the right times. The above phrase is SO important. As an educator, I've learned that if I prepare and don't do, and my student's know it, I lose their respect and trust. The same applies for my wife and friends. You have to be willing to take the initiative, regardless of the risks that may come with it. Follow that you know is the right thing to do. If you are uncertain to whether it is right or not, seek counsel from friends, family, and most importantly...GOD! He will guide you through all the tough decisions and protect you. It won't always be easy, but following God's path ensures you are on the right track. Be assured that He won't give you more than you can handle, and decisions will be a little easier to make!

Last post from Poland

So time has come to an end. It is about 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday morning and I'm just heading to bed. Today was our one free day in Gdansk where we spent the day exploring the city...and boy was it amazing. We had the opportunity to visit a cathedral that was built in the 1500's, spent time in old town Gdansk, and we had the opportunity to visit some friends we met at camp.
A couple days into camp, Danielle told me we needed to find a time to eat with a couple she met from Poland. I was unsure at first of how it was going to work out. Ola and Krystopher(probably misspelled their names, but will fix later) have been married for 11 months, and Danielle and I have REALLY enjoyed getting to know them. They met us today in old town Gdansk for lunch and then helped us pick out souvenirs. Once we finished with that, they drove us over to their flat in a suburb of Gdansk. We spent a couple hours hanging out there, and met the rest of the team at a restaurant for dinner. After dinner, we stopped at a store(much like Menards) because they needed paint for their newly remodeled flat.

These two individuals are WONDERFUL. Coming to Poland, I never intended to build friendships that would blossom as much as this friendship has. While hanging out during camp, we quickly realized that we all had a lot in common. I would have NEVER guessed a Polish couple would spend their day off...AFTER being away from their home for a week, hanging out with us. They drove all the way into old city, which was 4o minutes to hang out. They were willing to drive us all the way back to their place, and then take us to meet our team at the restaurant. When we finished up with supper, it was pouring outside and they offered to give us a ride back to the church. The rest of our team walked back to the train station, and our new friends could have just left us with the team. But instead the offered to take us back to the church.

I don't know if they will ever read this, but I truly felt God gave us that friendship and I look forward to getting to know this couple more closely. This camp that we attended was different. Different in the fact I can't explain what happened here. So I won't try...yet! Please know that if you ask me how the trip was, I am NOT going to give you an abridged version, so choose your words wisely!

Tomorrow we take off from Gdansk at 7:00 a.m. and will arrive in Denver around 7:00 p.m. God willing, we will make all connections and our luggage will arrive in Denver when we do. Please pray for safe travels for all of the Americans together! I'm excited to be home but more nervous to transition back to the life in America. Camp created a sense of a high and it will be hard to come down from here without feeling lost and disappointed. Please pray the entire team has a safe transition back to their home lives and that we continue our missions experience at a more local destination!!!

Camp Conclusion

So our time here in Garcyn has come to an end. Last night we had our last meet and had a huge banquet. It was a pirate theme and many people dressed up. Some of the high school guys from my group built a giant boat out of cardboard to enter the meeting place. It was great seeing them work together. After dinner was over, we met back in the "sing" room to continue worship, and campers had the opportunity to share their testimony or talk about the camp. It was the most touching experience ever. There were non-believers who had decided to commit themselves to a intimate relationship with Christ. Many of the polish spoke about how the American testimonies were eye opening and spiritually saturated in truth. Conner's testimony touched the lives of many, and God blessed my testimony to help a lady come to faith in Christ.

The night of my testimony, a lady came up to one of the pastors and let him know that her father was dying, and asked what she should do. She told him that my testimony really got her thinking about what decision she needed to make. She was torn, because she wanted to be with her earthly family but she was enjoying camp and getting to know her eternal family. Pastor reassured her that it was okay to go be with her dad before he past away, so she did that. But before she left, she asked the pastor to pray for her. She had decided to turn her life to the love of Christ, and wanted to follow HIM! That is just one example of wonderful stories that were shared. God TRULY works through this camp with bringing people closer to Christ!

After that we had the opportunity to award our English class with their class certificates and just mingle and socialize. Lots of pictures were taken and I'm VERY excited to look at them. The Chojnice church photographs, takes videos, and records audio of a lot of the camp...and they spent ALL last night burning DVD's for all of the campers!

These polish friends also know how to make somebody feel welcomed. My bible study group bought me a gift, my English class gave me a gift, and the entire camp gave each American a gift. It's funny, because they come up to us and thank us for coming out and helping them grow in their faith...but they have NO IDEA what I have gained from this camp. Simply typing this brings tears to my eyes and a joy to my heart...at how awesome God is.

I'm up early today because one of my group members is leaving before breakfast to fly back to the U.K. His family is friends with one of the pastors, and this was his first camp. Will is a wonderful young man and it has been great getting to know him. What I appreciate about Will is that he didn't accept the Lord this week because of the emotions that were in the air. He is mature enough to know when he truly believes. My prayer is that he finds the answers he needs through the bible and prayer! He is one of the most polite high schooler I've met, and he represents his country well!

As you can tell, I could type all day. There are so many experiences and emotions I want to share. Going back to the states is truly going to be hard. I was talking with Justin (youth pastor from Washington) last night about how you can't explain what goes on here. I want so bad to people to understand what this trip means to me, but I can't. Words fail to wrap up the emotions and experiences I have had. Coming to Poland, this was going to be my opportunity to experience short-term overseas missions. I figured Danielle and I would come out here and have a good time, and then check that experience off the list. I truly feel God has a different plan than that. Like many other Americans that came this year, part of my heart has latched on to Poland and the people. I pray God will continue to lead me back here year after year. It is my responsibility to serve him, and this camp does just that. I encourage others to experience this. Whether it is coming with to Poland, or another trip. Americans often think missions trips are for the benefit of the people you are visiting, but I now know God teaches even the missionaries. Praise God for all of his wonderful blessings! We have no idea what heaven is going to be like, but know it is a glorious place! The only way to explain worshipping in Poland with these wonderful people is that it feels like a taste of heaven...and that is exciting!

Poland Update

Greetings from Poland. Today marks our 9th day in Poland and we only have 3 more days left. So far, Danielle has been keeping her blog up-to date, so I haven’t posted much. It is about 6 a.m. and I decided I would do a quick blog post. I have to start by saying..GOD IS AMAZING! Preparing for this trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Will the language barrier cause problems? Would I struggle to adjust to the time here? Will I like the food? I can safely say I have not had ANY problems adjusting to the life the Polish culture has to offer. I have spent the past 6 days working with Polish teenagers(high school age guys), and getting to know them better. The first day was rough...they were very quiet during bible study and spoke a lot of Polish in our English Learning Time. During Conversation time, they did not talk much either. 6 days later, it is amazing how God can break those walls down and create relationships! I’m going to miss these guys. It feels like I’m just getting through to them, and don’t have the time to understand their hearts. During bible study, the only time I get the bulk of them to participate is when we PRAY! Who would know, a group of high school guys comfortable to pray aloud together. I have so many GREAT stories of these guys and looking back, I wish I would have blogged more, because knowing me I will forget a lot of these memories. I’m hoping to continue to grow relationships with some of these kids through facebook or email.

I also figured that this trip would be a once in a lifetime experience. I’ve always been interested in short-term overseas missions, and I figured this would quench that curiosity. I truly felt it did just the opposite! Right now I feel extremely convicted to return next year. Just the opportunity to continue on relationships I’m creating and help bring more of these guys to Christ really excites me! Below are some pictures from the camp, various activities. There is a Polish guy (Piotr) who has been doing a GREAT job documenting the trip and I can’t wait to swap pictures with him. I’ve also gotten to know a pastor in training from Gdansk (Remek) and I am excited to spend a free day in Gdansk with him and our new friends. He is very interested in sound production so we found some common ground and went from there!

Along with new polish friendships, I’ve met some GREAT people from the states. Along with our team, there is also a team from Washington. I’ve gotten to know a youth pastor from a church new Key Port, Washington really well. We enjoy the same bad jokes and it has been great forming Christian relationships with followers the same age as I am. I will hopefully be able to post a couple more thoughts and add more pictures as free time opens up (hahaha). We fly out of Poland on August 10th and begin school on August 13th, so when returning to the states it will be hard to juggle the desire to document this trip with the need to prepare for school!!! Thank you all for your prayers and support of this trip. It has truly been a moving trip and helped grow me in my faith as well!

(This is Justin, the youth pastor from Keyport, Washington church. He has the same sense of humor as me and is a GREAT guy!)

(This is some of the guys from my Bible Study Group. This picture was taken during our Olympic games. Not to brag...but our team took 1st place!)

Missions Trip to Poland

So as most of you know, Danielle and I decided a while back to go on a short terms mission trip to Poland. Our home church in Ogallala travels to Poland twice a year to help put on English Family Camps. Danielle and I will leave tomorrow and fly back to the states on August 10th. While in Poland, I will be working with high school men and Danielle is working with middle school females. While with those groups we will be doing bible studies. Then I will be working with high school co-ed advanced english speakers and Danielle will be working with middle school co-ed beginning english speakers.

Right now Danielle and I are sitting at Sleep Inn right outside of DIA. We will be shuttling to the airport tomorrow morning at 6:45 and our flight leaves Denver at 8:43. We make a stop in Washington D.C. and then board a plane to fly to Munich, Germany. From Munich we have one more short flight to Gdansk, Poland. We will spend a total of 13 1/2 hours in flight, with the D.C. to Munich flight taking 8 1/2 hours.

I'm very excited to see what God does through me on this missions trip. This is something that I truly feel will bring Danielle and I even CLOSER together...plus we get to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary tomorrow flying(it will be Danielle's first time). We will have a computer with us and hope to update our blogs as we have time. For the sake of simplicity, Danielle and I will combine our blogs and post them on her blog (daniellehelzer.blogspot.com) so feel free to follow. Most importantly, feel free to pray for us and over the Polish camp participants...that the word of God will be heard and understood and the seeds be planted to grow into loving Christians. Thanks a bunch for following and look forward to reading replies!

Talent is Never Enough Chapter 2: "Passion Energizes Your Talent"

The focus of Chapter two is PASSION! For my students, you know that I am very enthusiastic when it comes to passion. Before sharing my thoughts on passion, let's review some of Maxwell's thoughts on passion.
Maxwell argues that a passionate person with limited talent will outperform a passive person who possesses great talent. He feels this is because passionate people act with boundless enthusiasm, and they just keep going. One research studied showed the correlation between following passion and financial success
  • 1500 people participated in this study. 83%(group A) of them embarked on a career chosen for the prospects of making money now in order to do what they wanted later. 17%(group B) pursued what they wanted to do now and worry about money later. At the end of 2o years, 101 had become millionaires. Of the 101 millionaires, only 1 was from group A
Maxwell argues that passion will do much for a person, including:

1) Passion is the First Step to Achievement: loving what you do is the key that opens the door for achievement; it's difficult to achieve when you don't have the desire to do so; the only way you can achieve anything of significance is to really want it. Passion provides that.

2) Passion Increases Willpower: what we accomplish in life is based less on what we want and more on how much we want it; people who want something enough usually find the willpower to achieve it; you can't help people become winners unless they want to win

3) Passion Produces Energy: with passion, you don't have to produce perseverance because it is naturally present in you. If somebody claims to feel "burnt out", the truth is that they probably never were on fire.
"Death isn't the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside of us while we live" - Norman Cousins

4) Passion Is the Foundation for Excellence

5) Passion Is the Key to Success: People are such that whenever anything fires their souls, impossibilities vanish; When 200 executives were asked what makes people successful, the #1 quality given was enthusiasm, NOT TALENT! 80% recognized that there needed to be a fire within to achieve success

6) Passion Makes a Person Contagious: people are instructed by reason, but they are inspired by passion.
"You cannot kindle a fire in any other heart until it is burning within your own" - Eleanor Doan
Maxwell Then goes on to explain how to fire up your passion. I found this part of the chapter to be especially rewarding and motivating.

1) Prioritize Your Life According to Your Passion: don't spend too much time doing tasks for which you neither possess talent or passion. You must align what you are doing with your passions. This will not eliminate struggles, but you can face them with greater energy & enthusiasm. Makings this changes will involve risk, but it is so important to have your priorities line up with your passions.

2)Protect Your Passions: In life, there are two types of people when it comes to YOUR passions, they are either firelighters or firefighters. Firelighters are those who encourage you to follow your passions & dreams. Firefighters are those who throw cold water on your fire of passion and put it out. These are the individuals you want to distance yourself from, and they always find the negative in a situation. Firefighters use phrases like: "It's not in the budget", "That's not practical", "It'll never work", "That's not how we do things around here". These individuals, plain and simple, keep people from reaching their potential by trying to put out their fore of their passion.

3) Pursue Your Passion with Everything You've Got: Do you want to focus your energy on survival, success, or significance? You need to dream big. Maxwell ends by saying, "Your passion has the potential to provide you energy far beyond the limitations of your talent. In the end, you will be remembered for your passion.

Helzer's Thoughts
Living a passionate life is so much more rewarding than going through the motions of an mundane job that you are collecting paychecks for. What is mundane to me may be a passion for somebody else, so pursue your personal passion. Life is NOT about how big your bank account is or how nice your house is. Now I understand those MAY be byproducts of living a passionate life, but to me following your passions is living a fulfilling life. Just through the process of talking about passion I feel more uplifted and able to handle more difficult situations. The point Maxwell made that hit hard with me was to "Protect Your Passion." It is so important to have the strength to cut yourself off from those who are stomping on your passions. Unfortunately, those could be superiors who you can't avoid, but strive to surround yourself with MORE firelighters than firefighters. I LOVE taking Master's Classes because for 5 weeks, I am surrounded by other professionals who share some of the same passions. I LOVE attend NCDA or NMEA conventions because if feels like I just juiced up on 'roids or something. I return to my everyday life fired up. The goal then is to remain fired up, but SURROUNDING yourself with lighter fluid. In 7 days, Danielle and I leave for Poland for a missions trip. My hopes and prayers is that we return with a uncontrollable fire for Christ and can keep that fire burning strong in Ogallala.
If anybody out there feels they need that "lifeline" or connection with somebody who shares the same passions, seek them out. You know how to get a hold of me (or should). Please remember to follow your passion, prioritize your life around them, and PROTECT them. What you are passionate about will help determine what life you will live and be happy!

Talent is Never Enough Chapter 1: "Belief Lifts Your Talent"

"The first and greatest obstacle to success for most people is their belief in themselves" Maxwell hits the nail on the head with this thought. As I look at my own success, doubt by far holds me back. I doubt I am capable enough, I doubt I have the time to succeed, etc. Maxwell goes on to explain that it is a lack of trust that prevents success, which is a self-imposed limitation.

This chapter was great for me to read, because it helped me to approach my frustrations with growth. I think what I struggle with the most is when you come across a very successful individual who is as arrogant as all get up. I know we have all met that person. Regardless of their success, you leave the experience with a bad taste in your mouth. Then you can meet somebody as equally successful, who is modest and easy to talk with. My fear of being certain of my abilities is that I will become one of those arrogant individuals. In my career...life, I desire nothing more than to be approachable by ALL who have a desire or need to get to me. Last week I had the opportunity to attend an NCDA Convention, and observe both kinds of people, those who are modest and those who are arrogant. At convention, I have the opportunity to be surrounded by the who's-who of choral education. I have learned that my personal belief of MYSELF is the biggest hurdle I get. Can I approach Dan Hayes, Kurt Runestad, Colin Brown, Don Reimer, etc. with the feeling of validity and that I'm not wasting their time. BELIEF plays a huge part in this struggle of mine.

In Maxwell's writing, he goes on to talk about some "beliefs" worth buying into:
1)Belief In Your Potential: I talked about this a bit in the above example. Believing in your potential is accepting the fact that you are going to live PAST average. You will not be held back by physical limitations and you will follow what you feel is the best options. Yes there will be mistakes, but you learn from them. Potential is what lies within you, and whether you decide to bring it out.
2)Believe in Yourself: "It's one thing to believe that you possess remarkable potential. It's another thing to have enough faith in yourself that you think you can fulfill it" I think this quote is pretty self-explanatory. He also provides a credo that golfer Arnold Palmer uses:
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you'd like to win, but think you can't
It's almost certain you won't...
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.
3)Believe in your Mission: My History & Philosophy of Music Education class this summer really helped me to create a stronger belief in my mission. Our professor, Dr. Richmond, talked so passionately and intellectually about the need for music education. You can tell this man believed in his mission of music education. My goal this year is to fervently seak this belief & apply it to my life. BY doing this, Maxwell argues that you are empowered, encouraged, & enlarged. You would have to be sick NOT to want to feel encouraged and more successful. Only through believing in your mission will this happen!

For the sake of time, & keeping the attention of my audience, I will leave out discussion of the second half of the chapter(or even better, go buy the book and read it for yourself)

On a deeper (and much more important level), how does my belief in my Christian faith motivate & guide me. Do I believe in myself as a follower of Christ. do I believe in my potential to be a "warrior" for Christ and lead, follow, & teach as Christ wants me to? Do I believe in the mission of my Christian faith? What is my purpose? I can honestly say I lack in my belief in my ability. It is amazing to see how "effortless" it is for some to preach, serve, etc. for Christ. I have often times considered a career in the ministries, and reading just the little bit of Maxwell that I have has helped me to realize I need to work on these passion in my life. Make it more apparent that it IS a passion of mine!

Talent is Never Enough: Preface

So I have actually read the first two chapters of this book, and can't recall a whole lot of information that I digested. Like I said....bad memory. So before continuing with reading, I'm going to skim through the first two chapters and refresh my memory, blogging my thoughts and important quotes I find along the way.

The book
Talent is Never Enough starts with a preface to the first chapter. Within this opening, Maxwell asks the question: DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? He is talking about succeeding. Do "I" have the necessary tools to be successful. Maxwell then goes on to share some of his beliefs in regards to talent & success:

1) EVERYONE HAS TALENT: "people have equal value, but not equal giftedness" As an educator, this quote really hits home. There are times I find my students values in their gifts. I need to strive to view ALL of my students as equal regardless of their abilities. Maxwell also reassures the believe that "all of us have something we can do well" If this is true, it is my responsibility to find that "something" within myself and within those who I live with and am around daily.

2)DEVELOP THE TALENT YOU HAVE, NOT THE ONE YOU WANT: "why do most people spend the majority of their time focused on strengthening their weaknesses?" Maxwell teaches people to stop working on weaknesses & start working on strengths. To be completely honest, I don't know how I feel about this. It really forces me to forget the feeling that I shouldn't have weaknesses. Human condition provides the opportunity for ALL to have weaknesses, so why should we focus on them? If I were to focus on this approach to talent, I would NOT be blogging right now, I would NOT be making a conscious effort to read more, and I would DEFINITELY not be focusing on my piano skills. I think I would be continue to focus on relationships. I would look more at character education. My life would be even MORE engrossed with the youth of America! This is still a tough point for me to continue to chew on...any outside thoughts?

3)ANYONE CAN MAKE CHOICES THAT WILL ADD VALUE TO TALENT: "the key choices you make - apart from the natural talent you already have - will set you apart from others ho have talent alone" Maxwell adds 13 key choices that can be made to maximize any person's talent. For the sake of simplicity, I'm focusing on the token word of each choices: Belief, Passion, Initiative, Focus, Preparation, Practice, Perseverance, Courage, Teachability, Character, Relationships, Responsibility, & Teamwork. Talent alone will help you along the path of success, but focusing on the above words will help you to stand out in your field of choice. Make it a goal to weekly focus on one of the above terms & see what difference it can make in your successes.

So what does all of this mean? Talent is truly NEVER enough. You have to make a decision to work at those talents to maximize true growth. As I continue to read this blog, I'm really going to strive to find ways to apply this to ALL areas of my life. It is easy to find the connection to my career, but what about my walk with God, my service to my wife, my relationships with friends & families. Success, leadership, and talent play important roles in ALL of these areas of life, so don't neglect majority to gain growth in just one!

Dr. Suess said it best in the book "Oh the Places You'll Go!" when he said:
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yoruself
Any direction you choose.

So I ask you...which direction are you steering your life?

Attempt At Intellect

So here I sit, hesitantly diving into the realms of blogging. My wife has been blogging for quite some time now, as has my sister...and I have felt the pressure to take a stab at this whole blogging thing myself. For those of you who know me, I'm not eloquent with words. Most of the time, I don't have anything of importance to say, and I would prefer to make some snide or sarcastic remark to participate in a conversation. So why the change of heart?

PEER PRESSURE! kind of. My wife always talks about how much it helps her to put her thought into words. I also had the opportunity to complete my second summer of Master's Classes and really enjoyed learning! Don't get me wrong, I missed my summer...but being surrounded by scholarly individuals who have a passion for learning and music really inspired me to grow personally & professionally. Also, for those of you who DON'T know me, I have a horrible memory. I hope by synthesizing my thoughts it will help me to submit more information to memory.

So what do I post on? Should I post on the day in the life of Helzer? Do I post my thoughts on politics & religion? Do I post the most random information I can possibly think of? Or do I just strive to post, not letting this idea vanish within a week of conception?

I'm going to begin my first posting series on Leadership. This summer I decided to do some more reading into leadership, hoping to grow my leadership abilities & my ability to lead my students to productive leadership. I will be keeping you up-to-date with my current reading and thoughts. I encourage any followers (I can't help but laugh at the thought of somebody following my blog) to post questions, comments, or arguments that will force me to think even more! The first book that I bought concerning leadership is by John C. Maxwell. It is actually a piece of literature containing two books, "Becoming an person of Influence" & Talent is Never Enough."

Please enjoy the readings and I hope you can find something of worth in it...whether it be a great idea or HORRIBLE grammar!
